Biography

Lakecia Benjamin was born and raised in Washington Heights, Manhattan. From an early age she was exposed to many global forms of music in her neighborhood including, salsa, merengue, jazz and other Latin Music. She would go on to get her bachelor’s degree from The New School, while studying under musicians such as Reggie Workman, Gary Bartz, Joe Chambers, and Buster Williams. After graduating, Benjamin would go on to tour globally, including playing at Barack Obama’s 2009 Inauguration. Lakecia Benjamin’s style can best be described as soulful, searing, explorative, and unapologetic. She plays with heart and fortitude unique to her. Some of her associated acts are, Clark Terry, Rashied Ali, David Murray, James Blood Ulmer, Santigold, Missy Elliot, Alicia Keys, Count Basie Big Band, the Roots, and Stevie Wonder.
