Bio

Kenny Garrett was born in Detroit, Michigan in 1960. He gained early experience and notoriety in 1978, when at 18 years old, he was hired to play in the Duke Ellington band. This was followed closely by associations with the That Jones/ Mel Lewis Orchestra, Art Blakey, Miles Davis, Freddie Hubbard, and Woody Shaw. With a resume that thick, Kenny Garrett formally launched a solo career in 1984 with the release of Introducing Kenny Garrett. Kenny Garrett is known for his playing across a wide range of styles including, avant garde, modal jazz, fusion, as well as straight ahead. He takes great influence from John Coltrane while at the same time singing with his own voice, as his sound can be characterized with harmonic sophistication as well as an intense, large, and cutting tone.
